Kyle walked slowly down the stairs. He was already dreading the conversation about to happen. He has played his responses countless number of times. His reaction, denial, most of the time was just on point! It’s not that he didn’t care about Ama o but you see eh the girls of today even when you shove your wedding ring down their throat, they’ll swallow it and kiss you.
“Hmm”, he heaved a pathetic sigh of sadness, maybe with his last step from the stairs.
He saw her sitting there solemnly. He hated himself for what he did to her, and is still doing and will never stop. You know the saying that when you get so much deep it’s really difficult to get out? Well, Kyle was a typical example and he was having a really really hard time coming out of his womanising. Although it sounds like it, he hasn’t even given it the little bit of thought.
Ama was far from the perfect wife. She cared more about her career than she did her marriage, but she wasn’t going to let go without a fight. She didn’t even recall when last they had a decent meal together. She was doing her MBA when they got married and right from there, there has always been issues. First it was because she was always in school, then it became that she was always at works and now he won’t even look at her. She tried mmom. But the man had become so used to not seeing her that …
It’s strange. It’s strange because they seemed oblivious of each other. Worse than roommates but not enemies, just strangers. They were fine like that. They were. Until she decided to change everything. She thought she should try being a couple one last time but everything backfired.
*****MANY HOURS AGO*****
Kyle was in a meeting when his secretary brought him his phone. His first instinct was to chide him for disturbing the meeting but he withheld as he saw the urgency at hand. It was Ama, his wife. She had called him countless number of times. Although he wanted to call immediately, he refrained. It could be a mistake for all knew. Against his own conscience, he decided to call her. She said there was a matter of urgency at home. Could he get off work early? He answered in the affirmative. He was curious. He could not remember the last time she spoke to him, to talk of call him. He smiled.
He left work early. Really early. He couldn’t hold his anxiety.
The gate was locked when he got home. He honked. And honked. And honked. Just as he got down to open it with his spare key, the incompetent security man opened the gate. He stopped his red coup when he got to where he was standing and gave him the eyeing of his life. He was amused himself.
“Yes sah!”, he shouted with a stupid grin.
“Mctheeew see this…” , he restrained himself and drove away.
He left everything in the car. He just jumped and skipped all the way into the house. Something wasn’t right but if he’s going to get tonga that he’s paid for then no yawa. He walked right into Ama, literally. They stared at each other for a moment and burst into uncontrollable laughter. It felt so good laughing together. The last time they did that was at their wedding reception when one of the bridesmaids farted. Now, that was some very noisy fart, and embarrassing too. The poor girl was so mortified she couldn’t even give a cute smile.
“And where are you off to walking zuguma zuguma”, Ama finally found her voice
“My wife, she needs me”
Ama gave a shy smile.
”Care for a glass?”
She didn’t even wait for him to answer and shoved a glass into his hand.
“I thought it’s be nice to share a glass of wine with you”
Silence.
“I hope so”, was all Kyle to mutter after a while
Despite their good intentions, the night ended with Kyle calling Ama a bit**h and Ama stomping out of the house with an angry I’ll see you in the morning.
*****PRESENT*****
Judging from how stiff her shoulders were, Kyle thought it best to get some juice for himself because there was no way he was getting some of her coffee.
“Hi”, he said as inched closer to where she was seated at the dining table.
Ama didn’t budge. She only looked up after she had left her bomb.
“I want a divorce”, she repeated after hearing nothing from Kyle.

She got up.
“Ama, it doesn’t have to end this way”, Kyle got up with her. “I know we’re bad together but divorce?”
“Kyle, I know this is exactly how it’s supposed to end.”
A pause
“I’ve really thought this through for the past two years. Besides, I’m pregnant for someone else so I badly need this divorce”. With that said, she left the room. She didn’t take her car. There was Toyota Prado waiting for her out of house. She hopped in and it drove off.
Kyle was still dumbfounded by the news he has just received. Trust Ama to plan everything. She had left a copy of divorce papers for him.
He looked at the papers, she wasn’t taking anything, including the house and car. She gave him everything. She was always charitable. He thought with a smirk. He signed the divorce papers and walked upstairs.
He felt a pinch of pain in his stomach as he climbed into bed but he knew it wouldn’t last for long. This is how it had always been anyway. He closed his eyes and patiently waited to doze off to sleep once again.
It was all fun and game until she opted for divorce…
